I admit, even with my disdain for most period shooters, this one piqued my interest rather quickly. A semi-original storyline based off a real-life WWII British agent that didn’t revolve around troop movements and taking out tanks with bazooka launchers. It deals with the grittier, darker side of war; sneaking cyanide capsules to captured double agents, infiltrating enemy strongholds and single-handedly sabotaging their oil lines or railways, and assassinating high-ranking officials in the middle of the night and having to escape undetected. It’s this creation that draws Killzone 3 so engrossing and fun despite its weak story. With the fantastic pacing and set pieces in the campaign, along with the improved, fun multiplayer, Guerilla’s crafted a must own for PS3 shooting enthusiasts.

Killzone 3 is all about a war between two factions of humans . On one side, we have the ISA, the solid guys with human faces; on the other side are the Helghast, the red-goggled, mask-wearing enemies who are hell bent on subduing the rest of the universe. Killzone 3 picks up right where two left off, with a small group of ISA soldiers struggling to survive after being effectively cut off and left on the hostile Helghan homeworld. Buy Killzone 3 Throughout it all, you play as Sev, the returning hero from the second game, who is out to do as much damage to the enemy as he can before he’s caught, killed or rescued.

I won’t spoil the story, but I was disappointed with where it went and how uninteresting it was. Killzone 3 jumps around in time regularly, constructing a narrative that gives a good ground to explore different parts of the Helghast homeworld, but it’s not engaging. In general, the story feels like an afterthought, like it was figured out after the team planned out a series of cool levels and were forced to figure out a means to tie them altogether. It would have been nice to learn Guerilla explore the themes of hopelessness as the ISA struggle to survive in hiding on a hostile planet, but instead Killzone 3 basically glosses over the top of this with a speedy fade out and a cut scene. This liberal use of fading between scenes, along with the occasional hiccup once loading, broke me out of the experience repeatedly, exacerbating the generally boring story.

The players of Killzone are one-dimensional. From our hero, Sev, to the evil Helghast leaders, you pretty much have their personalities pinned from the first moment they swagger onto the screen. The interplay between characters is totally predictable, and we’re never given a view of the complex dynamics we might expect out of soldiers at war or a moment of pause or regret about how things play out. Unlike Captain Templar from the original Killzone, there are no likeable characters in Killzone 3. Sure, they’re charming in a brutish trend, but Sev and the rest of the ISA feel more like unthinking meatheads than soldiers dealing with a life or death situation and a feeling of abandonment. They just aren’t people you can determine with in any significant way.

After owning NHL 11 since it came out on September 10th 2010, I decided to write a review about it for any one that’s trying to decide if they should buy this game. In this review, I will go over the different modes of play, including the Online mode, and some tips and tricks I’ve learned while playing the game.

Gameplay and Graphics:

When NHL 10 was first released, the graphics and advanced gameplay amazed hockey fans across the globe. The realism of the movements of the players was truly amazing, along with the fact that most of the players actually looked like themselves. Unfortunately, the graphics in NHL 11 are very similar to those in NHL 11. The players and jerseys look the same, and the crowd is still as robotic as usual. But what separates NHL 11 from NHL 10 is EA’s new Revolutionary Real-Time Physics Engine, which allows the game to create more realistic movements that players would actually make. That includes face-offs, checks, shots, saves, and even breaking a stick on the slap shot. These features really give the game an authentic hockey game feel, rather than just another boring hockey video game. Overall, the new motion graphics make NHL 11 the best hockey game ever made, and for a true hockey fan, a game you will really get into.

Online Modes:

In NHL 11, there are tons of different ways to play online. These include:

- Online Versus: Get automatically matched up with someone in your skill level, pick a team, pick the jerseys, and play a 15 minute game. This is the mode I use the most often, simply because it’s so quick and easy to start a game.

- Online Team Play: Create a game lobby where you can invite multiple friends, up to 10 people, talk with them via microphone, and even choose which position you would like to play for the whole game. Be a forward, defense man, or even a goalie. This mode is great if you have more than one friend you would like to play with.

- Online Shootout: Exactly as the name implies, this mode will pair you up with someone, and you will go straight to the shootout. You will control the shooter for your team, as well as your goalie, so be prepared to make the save!

-EA Sports Hockey League: In this mode, you can use your My Pro player and create a team with your friends. Your team will play against other teams in your league, and there are even playoffs for the good teams.

Game Modes:

There are also some game modes which do not require internet access. These include:

-Playoff Mode: Pick a team, and go to the playoffs instantly. You will get the chance to win all 16 games required to win the Stanley Cup. This is a great way to get some playoff hockey action without having to go through a full season.

-Shootout Mode: Choose two teams, pick a side, and go against the computer in some shootout hockey. Playing against the computer will refine your shootout skills, and it’s a great way to have some fun in the shootout when you’re offline.

-Practice Mode and Create a Play Mode: Both these modes allow you to choose the number of players you want to have on the ice, and practice shooting, or making plays. You can choose 3-on-2, 2-on-1, or even 3-on-0. Plays you make in this mode will be affective in online modes as well as against the computer.

My Pro Mode:

Have you ever wanted to see what it’s like to be a professional NHL player? Well this is as close as it will get to the real thing. With My Pro, you can make a player, choose which position you want him to play, the type of player he is (Play maker, sniper, grinder, etc), and enter the NHL draft. Once you are drafted, you get to play in the exhibition games for your team. If you play well, you will most likely stay in the pros. If you don’t perform as well as the coach wants, it’s the minors for you. As your player gets more points, he will also get XP, which are experience points you can use to upgrade your players assets. XP can help your players shot accuracy, slap-shot power, a bunch of different things. My Pro is probably one of the best features of the game, and it’s one that will keep you interested for a long time.

Overall, NHL 11 is the best hockey video game to date. The Online mode is the best out there, and all the features included in the game make it one you will be playing for a long time.
