Makers of the popular League of Legends Riot Games are celebrating Valentine’s Day in ways only they can. The “Sealed with a Crit” contest allowed fans to submit their own League of Legends-themed card. Community coordinator Nikasaur requested that they be “big enough to be printable, cool enough to give to others, and funny enough that they totally creep out Rioterz [Riot staff] when they’re received.”

To explain to non-fans, League of Legends is one of a growing number of PC games based on the famous Warcraft mod DotA (also known as Defence of the Ancients). Riot Games, who primarily base their business on micro transactions (paid for with Riot Points obtained by purchasing cards from stores such as Gamestop or directly from the client’s store), began in 2006 in Culver City. Tencent Holdings recently bought a large stake in the company, Riot maintaining independent operation and management regardless.

Riot have also done a few other things in order to celebrate the holiday, including having fifty per cent off the Twisted Fate Jack of Hearts skin (as well as Guerrilla Tristana and Emerald Taric; truly outrageous). Twisted Fate himself has various Valentine’s Day connotations. His Tango skin is partnered by Evelynn’s one (although her reputation as a fickle paramour is pretty widespread).

Those of you who prefer download games will be pleased to know that League of Legends can be acquired online and even free. Buying Riot Points isn’t necessary in order to play well; most of the things you need can be acquired with the Influence Points you earn during play. As such League of Legends is an awesome game to spend Valentine’s Day playing (just remember to spend some quality time together too)!
