Author: Makers of the popular League of Legends Riot Games are celebrating Valentine’s Day in ways only they can. The “Sealed with a Crit” contest allowed fans to submit their own League of Legends-themed card. Community coordinator Nikasaur requested that they be “big enough to be printable, cool enough to give to others, and funny enough that they totally creep out Rioterz [Riot staff] when they’re received.”
To explain to non-fans, League of Legends is one of a growing number of PC games based on the famous Warcraft mod DotA (also known as Defence of the Ancients). Riot Games, who primarily base their business on micro transactions (paid for with Riot Points obtained by purchasing cards from stores such as Gamestop or directly from the client’s store), began in 2006 in Culver City. Tencent Holdings recently bought a large stake in the company, Riot maintaining independent operation and management regardless.
