ok so I have a flash drive and when I plug that in, I can play any of the video files on there (avi, mp4), but when I tried with an external hard drive, it wouldnt even let me click the button and it wanted me to delete everything on there and format it specifically for xbox 360 storage. Is this because it is a hard drive, or will some hard drives work like a USB flash drive where it will just let me pick the file and play?
tl;dr can you play videos off of a hard drive on xbox 360? How?

Make sure the external is formatted to FAT-32 first. It will not detect it as a media device unless it’s in that format. Flash drives are already formatted that way You can make a partition while it’s plugged into your computer. FAT has a limit of 4GB though. Make sure your your videos in the right format too. Ones that I know work are mp4, avi, and wmv. When streaming media, look under the video section of My Xbox. The other listing under the system settings-memory section is to format it to use as a storage device for game data. Don’t use that one unless you want to use it that way and don’t mind losing all files that are currently on it.
