my sister and i have been arguing about this for a while. she says that she wants to give up video games, but only the ones that she doesn’t usually play (she actually said that she means ones with a controller) but i told her that when she gives up video games, it means ALL games that fall under the video game category. meaning xbox, ps3, wii, nintendo gamecube, nintendo DS, AND computer games.
aren’t you supposed to give something up that you wouldn’t normally go without for that long and that would be difficult for you to go without?

Since the sacrifice is meant to be a form of penance, giving up something that makes no difference defeats the purpose. I’m with you–for her sacrifice to be truly meaningful, she should consider giving up ALL video games.

that is the whole point. I gave up tv many years ago (will not do it again…lol)
I personally no longer give anything up, but if you do, you supposed to give up something that will be difficult

you are correct it’s ALL games. what she’s doing is like someone who gives up chocolate who is allergic to chocolate and can’t eat it anyway LOL

Yes, it’s supposed to be an expression of sacrifice to go with along w/The Jesus’ 40 days of suffering/sacrifice. She is making a mockery of it by giving up something she really doesn’t do…sorta like the virgin who gave up sex for Lent. (Seriously, I knew a dude like that in high school. He was hilarious.)

Yes. Your sister is evidently struggling with that concept though! The ‘sacrifice’ she wants to make is not going to have much of an effect upon her at all. The fact that she is struggling with it so much suggests that it’s probably the thing she most needs to do.
However, you may also like to remember that the discipline or sacrifice chosen is a personal commitment; all you can really do is take responsibility for your own, and hopefully inspire her.

Try giving up LENT. It’s a “made up” thing anyhow.
BTW… this really is not an ETIQUETTE question… but thanks for asking!
    Have a polite day.
Etiquette takes over where laws end.
