In this game, you play the part of Jack, an unwitting time traveler. After scoring a free amusement park ride ticket, you find yourself taking a ride back through time and plunging into a primal world. You meet a beautiful tribal princess who informs you that you are the prophesied savior who will lead the tribe and defeat their enemies. She quickly puts you to work managing the tribe and organizing their activities.

Jack of All Tribes is a village-building time management game similar to the hit Roads of Rome series. You guide villages as they progress and become prosperous centers full of happy and productive people. You help them build homes, resource-producing buildings, entertainment buildings and defenses. In addition, there are the occasional crises that need to be solved and lost treasure to be found.

The game is divided into different levels, with each level getting you to explore a different part of this primitive land and meeting a new tribe of people desperate for your help. One chieftain might need your help in putting out fires, another might need help in driving off savage invaders, while a third might need you to gather enough food to feed his starving tribe. These objectives form part of each level’s goals that you need to achieve before the timer runs out.

You start most levels with very little: a couple of villagers, a basic campfire and a few resources such as wood and food are usually all you’ll get. The villagers are very versatile though. They can be instructed to construct buildings, chop wood, harvest food and man buildings such as the lumber mill and pig farm. However, they have needs that have to be met. When they are hungry, you have to send them to the campfire to eat (assuming of course that you have enough food in store). They also need to be kept happy and entertained, and fueled with good old fashioned alcohol!

The villagers can construct a whole bunch of buildings, from houses that attract more villagers and pig farms that produce food, to a bar that provides drinks and statues that make your villagers happy. However, these buildings require you to have enough resources in store before they can be constructed. The good thing is you only have to worry about 3 resources: wood, cash and food. Building construction usually requires both wood and cash, while food is needed to feed your villagers when they get hungry. Wood is obtained by chopping trees and from the lumber mill, while food is obtained via picking berries, harvesting crops and via farms. Cash is obtained from the villagers when you provide them with housing, drink and entertainment.

The villagers can perform other tasks too, such as manning production buildings such as the lumber mill. You can queue a string of tasks, and the villagers will scurry about trying to complete them. Sometimes, your buildings will catch fire. You will then have to quickly assign the villagers to put the fire out or risk having the buildings destroyed. You will also face the occasional attack by rival tribesmen. To prevent them from hurting your people and destroying the village, you need to fend them off by repeatedly clicking on them. Later on, you will be able to train a dinosaur who will help you fight off the barbarians (as well as give your villagers free rides around town)!

Throughout the game, you will also stumble across various “relics” that appear to be amusement park rides that got teleported back in time the same way you were. You get to play mini hidden object games, searching the wreckages for various items. Some of these items will also help you in your village-management tasks, giving you bonuses such as increasing your villagers’ fire-fighting speed and reducing their hunger levels.

Jack of All Tribes is a fun and engaging game, packaged in a beautiful and charming style. Farm Tribe is a “village simulation” game similar to the Virtual Villagers strategy game series. The premise of this game genre is that you have a village or tribe of people that go about their everyday lives performing whatever tasks they deem important. You are there to guide them, directing them to construct new buildings, search for food, explore their surroundings and research new technologies to make their lives more pleasant. It’s not open-ended though, as you have your own goals to achieve in your quest to create an advanced self-sufficient tribe.

The story in Farm Tribe revolves around Anny Chester and her scientist father Mark. Dear old dad had bought a plot of land in Mayan territory in order to perform research on the area and search for buried mysteries. Unfortunately, buying the land required him to take out a large loan, and it is up to daughter Anny to think of a way to make money to pay it back (with your help of course). Her dad’s research assistant suggests setting up a farm and selling the produce to the nearby village, and so begins your adventure in Farm Tribe.

You start the game with very little: just the plot of land by the river, with a rundown hut and a campfire. You will be given “quests” or goals though, so don’t fret that you won’t know what to do. The goals will help propel the story along, always giving you something to work towards so that you don’t just sit there twiddling your thumbs. You will be asked to construct new buildings, research new technologies, plant new crops, hire new workers etc.

You don’t have to do all these tasks on your own. There are workers or villagers who will be there helping you do all sorts of things from repairing and constructing buildings, foraging for food, cleaning up the place, doing research and more. Your workers are individual, having their own name and skill levels in farming, construction and research. However, these guys aren’t just people you can keep ordering to do stuff. They also have needs that you have to attend to. They need housing, food and drink, the occasional rest break, and people to chat with when they are lonely!

Once you have taken care of your workers’ needs, it’s time to focus on the primary goal of the game: creating a profitable farming business to pay the bills. At the start, all you can get your workers to do is forage for mushrooms, berries and fish, and sell those for cash. Once you research a few technologies and buy the necessary equipment, you’ll be able to start planting and harvesting crops like potatoes and sell those instead. You can also get recipes (either from quests or through the shop), and sell the finished products for better prices. Berries can be turned into jam, fish and potatoes can be fried together with spices etc. The money you earn is important as you will need it to buy new equipment, hire new workers and construct new buildings.

Cash isn’t the only thing you should focus on (though it is a pretty important aspect). Once you have more than a handful of workers, you will find that your strategy and time management skills are truly tested. There aren’t any timers, allowing each player to play at whatever pace they feel comfortable. But proper planning and quick adjustments and orders are required to make sure your workers are at their most productive.

You have to ensure that (depending on priorities) there is someone doing research, tending the crops, catching the fish, and constructing the next building. Luckily, you don’t have to do too much micro-management, as the workers will continue working their assigned jobs until told otherwise. Usually, you won’t be able to afford to have as many workers as there are jobs to do, so you will need to decide which jobs are more important and should be focused on at any given time. Things get more exciting when the farm gets hit be severe weather and you need to take workers off their normal jobs in order to clean up the place.

There is also plenty of story to go along with your village management. After all, the reason for getting the land in the first place is to do Mayan research. Throughout the game, you will encounter events and quests (from the nearby local tribe) that explore this story further. You will discover totems, scrolls and other relics from a long-forgotten era, and experience the adventure together with Anny and her dad.

Farm Tribe is a great village simulation strategy game, with plenty of character, story and vibrant graphics that will keep you entertained. It is slightly more structured than the popular Virtual Villagers games, but if you like those games, you will be pleased with Farm Tribe.

Haunted Halls: Green Hills Sanitarium is a psychological thriller in the form of a hidden object adventure game. The story concept is similar to the recent hit Batman: Arkham Asylum game, where you have to enter a mental asylum and face a whole host of creepy and disturbing scenes and characters. The story and setting also contain elements similar to H. P. Lovecraft’s macabre science fiction horror stories. Slimy tentacles and eyeballs are plentiful in this game! Needless to say, the game might not be suitable for the younger crowd.

The story in Green Hills Sanitarium begins with you driving to the sanitarium, after a week of not hearing from your boyfriend Tim. Tim had gone there a month earlier to investigate odd happenings, and had constantly communicated with you until a week ago. Worried, you set out to visit the place and look for him (for a change, the girl has to go rescue the guy!). Odd and creepy things start happening once you arrive at the mysteriously deserted building, and you soon become entangled in a thrilling mystery that seems to have been born out of somebody’s nightmares.

As mentioned above, the setting in this game is pretty twisted, and is probably not appropriate for children. There are depictions of both physical and mental torture, as the asylum inmates are made to face their greatest fears. An inmate who is afraid of water is trapped on a barrel, the only dry thing in a room full of water, eels and broken pipes with water gushing out. Similarly, an inmate with a fear of creepy-crawlies is stuck in a room full of ants, spiders, worms and other assorted creatures that make your skin crawl.

It is said that a good piece of entertainment should evoke emotion. Green Hills Sanitarium certainly does, although it is definitely not the warm-and-fuzzy sort of emotion! Playing the game will engulf you in a world that’s creepy and bizarre. In addition, the artwork and sound effects complement this atmosphere very well. The art has a painterly feel, in the style of the early 20th century, with an element of darkness that is very Lovecraftian. This is enhanced by the haunting soundtrack and the creepy noises coming from things like skittering bugs and slithering tentacles.

The gameplay here is of the interactive hidden object adventure variety. Like other games in this genre, you adventure through the many locations in and around the asylum, interacting with various things around the place and picking up objects that could prove useful in solving future puzzles and obstacles. Progression through the game is controlled via obstacles such as locked doors and obstructed passageways that are only accessible once you have solved the required puzzles in the previous areas.

Some of the objects that you interact with in the game will require you to fix a problem, such as gathering some piping and a wrench in order to get a water tap running. Examining other objects will either trigger a hidden object scene or puzzle. The hidden object scenes will require you to find objects strewn about the scene, some of which are crucial items that are needed to solve other puzzles. These hidden objects are very well hidden, providing you with a decent challenge in finding them.

The puzzles and minigames will also present a satisfying challenge. They run the gamut from those requiring logical problem-solving to those that test your pattern-matching and perception skills. They aren’t straightforward, but can be skipped if you’d rather continue on with the story instead of spending hours pulling your hair out trying to solve them. This story can also be experienced by reading your journal which contains scraps of notes and a developing story that is revealed as you achieve the many milestones in the game.

Haunted Halls: Green Hills Sanitarium is more a visit into a demented mind rather than an adventure game. Be creeped out of your skin and satisfyingly frightened as you explore the inner sanctum of the asylum and a twisted nightmare. You will like this game if you liked previous psychological games such as the Redrum series. The basic version of the game is not out yet, but you can get the Collector’s Edition of the PC game which includes exclusive content such as bonus gameplay, a built-in strategy guide, an exclusive soundtrack and more.

Nintendo might do Happy with the 3DS simply because from the 3D hook, but I merely think most gamers are choosing their smartphones or iPod Touches for gaming while on the road in these days. This PSP2( ps3 dual shock wireless controller ) prototype looks like it’s a completely different beast than the PSP(ps3 dualshock wireless controller ) Phone that’s been rumored (and which might include a better chance of success if sufferers are ready to switch handsets to it). Unless the PSP2 possesses his own hook that people don’t know about yet, I feel Sony will probably have trouble building an install base. Community Playdate: The Like Minded Gamers

Members of The Like Minded Gamers website will play Xbox LIVE® Gold Members in a Community Playdate on September 8.

The Like Minded Gamers will be online Wednesday, September 8, starting at 8:00 P.M. ET (5:00 P.M. PT) playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2™. If you’re a Gold Member (if not, upgrade now!), send a friend request or invite to these gamertags:

The Like Minded Gamers was formed upon the launch of Xbox 360 so adult gamers would have a place to game casually with and among other like-minded individuals. Whether just playing for fun or taking part in their famous in-house tourneys, leagues, or events, LMG is a place where adult gamers can just hang out and game with friends.
