The first My Kingdom for the Princess game was a breakout hit, introducing us to a game that managed to combine time management, resource management and adventure gaming into one great entertainment package. The game begins right after the conclusion of the previous game, with Arthur and the princess flying in a hot air balloon to some tropical islands for their honeymoon. Unfortunately, their holiday is cut short when their balloon crashes and they find themselves stranded on the islands. More disasters happen soon after, and Arthur has to help the locals rebuild the islands in exchange for their aid in getting him and the princess back home.

The game is played on a handful of islands, each of which contains several levels of increasing difficulty. You are required to complete quests in order to pass these levels. Examples of the quests include repairing bridges, constructing buildings and defeating enemies. These objectives have specific requirements; for example repairing a bridge will require a certain amount of wood and food, and a worker to perform the action. Similarly, defeating an angry bear will require a hunter’s skill, and enough gold to pay him.

This brings us to the resource management, which is the main part of the game. There are 3 resources: gold, wood and food. Every action you take in the game will involve either acquiring or using these resources. You’ll need food for the worker to clear debris, wood to build the hunting lodge, and gold to pay the hunter to kill enemies. So how do you get these resources? You could send your workers to collect any loose resources lying around. But more importantly, there will be resource buildings that you can construct. A fishing hut will produce food at a constant rate, while the sawmill does the same for wood.

As you can imagine, properly managing your resources will be the key to winning each level. There are also elements of puzzle gaming here, and you will need to properly plan the order of your actions. Do things in the wrong order and you might find yourself without wood and having to wait for the sawmill to slowly produce enough for you to continue. This is fine if you have all day… but you don’t. This is a time management game after all, and you will have to race against the clock to complete all the objectives in the set time.

Fortunately, you will have extra help in your rush to complete your objectives. Every time you perform a task, your power bar will increase. You can use this power to activate various cool effects such as making your workers run faster, having resources refill faster, hiring an extra temp worker or even stopping time itself! The more powerful the effect, the more power it requires and the less often you can use it.

In later levels, as the objectives become tougher to complete, you will be able to get extra help as well. You will be able to upgrade your buildings, making them produce more resources and housing more workers. It’s not plain sailing all the way though. The later levels are really mind-boggling, and even if you manage to complete them, you can still try to complete them in even less time to achieve expert ratings. And if that is too easy as well, the developers have also posted their own score records for you to beat!

The game is a nice unique blend of time management, resource management and puzzle solving. It is also supported by graphics and music that are bright and vibrant. Overall, My Kingdom For the Princess 2 will satisfy any time management fan, especially those who like the original My Kingdom for the Princess game or similar games such as Be A King. Farm Tribe is a “village simulation” game similar to the Virtual Villagers strategy game series. The premise of this game genre is that you have a village or tribe of people that go about their everyday lives performing whatever tasks they deem important. You are there to guide them, directing them to construct new buildings, search for food, explore their surroundings and research new technologies to make their lives more pleasant. It’s not open-ended though, as you have your own goals to achieve in your quest to create an advanced self-sufficient tribe.

The story in Farm Tribe revolves around Anny Chester and her scientist father Mark. Dear old dad had bought a plot of land in Mayan territory in order to perform research on the area and search for buried mysteries. Unfortunately, buying the land required him to take out a large loan, and it is up to daughter Anny to think of a way to make money to pay it back (with your help of course). Her dad’s research assistant suggests setting up a farm and selling the produce to the nearby village, and so begins your adventure in Farm Tribe.

You start the game with very little: just the plot of land by the river, with a rundown hut and a campfire. You will be given “quests” or goals though, so don’t fret that you won’t know what to do. The goals will help propel the story along, always giving you something to work towards so that you don’t just sit there twiddling your thumbs. You will be asked to construct new buildings, research new technologies, plant new crops, hire new workers etc.

You don’t have to do all these tasks on your own. There are workers or villagers who will be there helping you do all sorts of things from repairing and constructing buildings, foraging for food, cleaning up the place, doing research and more. Your workers are individual, having their own name and skill levels in farming, construction and research. However, these guys aren’t just people you can keep ordering to do stuff. They also have needs that you have to attend to. They need housing, food and drink, the occasional rest break, and people to chat with when they are lonely!

Once you have taken care of your workers’ needs, it’s time to focus on the primary goal of the game: creating a profitable farming business to pay the bills. At the start, all you can get your workers to do is forage for mushrooms, berries and fish, and sell those for cash. Once you research a few technologies and buy the necessary equipment, you’ll be able to start planting and harvesting crops like potatoes and sell those instead. You can also get recipes (either from quests or through the shop), and sell the finished products for better prices. Berries can be turned into jam, fish and potatoes can be fried together with spices etc. The money you earn is important as you will need it to buy new equipment, hire new workers and construct new buildings.

Cash isn’t the only thing you should focus on (though it is a pretty important aspect). Once you have more than a handful of workers, you will find that your strategy and time management skills are truly tested. There aren’t any timers, allowing each player to play at whatever pace they feel comfortable. But proper planning and quick adjustments and orders are required to make sure your workers are at their most productive.

You have to ensure that (depending on priorities) there is someone doing research, tending the crops, catching the fish, and constructing the next building. Luckily, you don’t have to do too much micro-management, as the workers will continue working their assigned jobs until told otherwise. Usually, you won’t be able to afford to have as many workers as there are jobs to do, so you will need to decide which jobs are more important and should be focused on at any given time. Things get more exciting when the farm gets hit be severe weather and you need to take workers off their normal jobs in order to clean up the place.

There is also plenty of story to go along with your village management. After all, the reason for getting the land in the first place is to do Mayan research. Throughout the game, you will encounter events and quests (from the nearby local tribe) that explore this story further. You will discover totems, scrolls and other relics from a long-forgotten era, and experience the adventure together with Anny and her dad.

Farm Tribe is a great village simulation strategy game, with plenty of character, story and vibrant graphics that will keep you entertained. It is slightly more structured than the popular Virtual Villagers games, but if you like those games, you will be pleased with Farm Tribe.

Twisted Lands: Shadow Town is a hidden object adventure game from Alawar Entertainment, the developer of hit games such as Snark Busters and the Craze and Farm Frenzy series. The game has the same high level of quality as Alawar’s other titles, featuring top notch gameplay, graphics and sound. However, this game introduces supernatural and psychological themes that are darker than the previous games.

You take on the role of a materialistic treasure-seeker, diving off the coast of Spain with your wife Angel keeping you company. Even after Angel’s admonishment that you should not be retrieving sunken treasure during your dives, you still go ahead and collect these artifacts. This time, one of the things you find is a strange figurine of a snake. Suddenly, you lose control of the boat and you are washed ashore onto a mysterious island. Unfortunately, Angel did not end up on the same part of the island as you, so you set out to look for her.

Twisted Lands will take you to mysterious and bizarre locations, from an underground door carved with the creepy snake symbol, an abandoned cruise liner, and a foggy town whose denizens all seem to have disappeared. You will also come across more of the snake figurines and encounter supernatural characters and ghostly apparitions. You will get dragged deeper into a surreal adventure in your quest to find your wife and get off the island.

Much of the game is shrouded in fog and has a dark and creepy feel to it, making it fit the theme of the game just right. Though dark, the art is detailed and beautifully drawn, depicting each scene in a style that suits it well. The soundtrack is also good and appropriate for the setting. The haunting music itself will give you goose bumps, though sometimes there can be an uncomfortable silence until you click something and the music starts again (which may be intentional).

The gameplay in Twisted Lands is pretty much what you would expect to find in a scene-based point-and-click adventure game of this style. You have a primary interface where you see your current surroundings as well as any objects of interest (which sparkle if you’re playing in casual mode). Clicking these objects will either zoom in closer for you to interact with, or launch a hidden object scene or puzzle. Sometimes, interacting with these objects will require you to have previously picked up a specific tool, say a screwdriver to remove a laptop’s casing.

The hidden object scenes feature artwork that is clean and crisp, and hidden objects that are detailed and not too difficult to pick out. It seems like these scenes don’t take as long to solve as those in some of the other hidden object games. This can be a good thing, as you get to focus on the developing story rather than squinting to find a few dozen hidden objects. The various mini-puzzles in the game are mainly logic-based, and are also quite interesting.

The story in Twisted Lands is really strong, and it is obvious that the game is very story-driven. Every time you move to a new scene or click an object of interest, you will get a first-person narration, either tying in the object in question with the story, or advancing the plot. After every few scenes, you will also be treated to an animated scene. These animations include flashback scenes of your time with your wife Angel every time you find an object that belongs to her. As you can imagine, these scenes draw you in and provide you with a vested interest in how the story unfolds. One thing missing from this game though is voice-acting. But considering how bad the voice-acting is in some of the other hidden object games, not having voices might not be a bad thing…

This game does not boast very complex gameplay or puzzles, but instead wows you with a story that flows as you experience the game. The premise revolves around the supernatural and a missing persons mystery theme, and you will like it if you liked similar games such as Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove or Edgar Allan Poe’s The Black Cat. The basic version of the game is not out yet, but you can get the Collector’s Edition of the PC game which includes exclusive content such as a bonus chapter, new puzzles and more.
